KIDS, COURTS AND CITIZENSHIP Kids, Courts and Citizenship, a program originally developed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Joyce London Alexander, is a field trip that brings fifth grade students to the Moakley U.S. Courthouse to speak with a United States Marshal, attorneys from the United States Attorney’s Office and the Federal Defender’s Office, and a judge about their jobs. Students also participate in a jury selection and deliberation exercise.
Through this program, students learn about the wide variety of legal careers open to them. They learn the importance and difficult process of selecting an impartial jury as well as the challenge juries face in coming to a fair, unanimous verdict.
Currently, this program is only open to Boston Public School fifth grade classrooms.
